Alpental BC Booter JAM

The Alpental BC Booter Jam, AKA El Salto Grande, went off on Cinco de Mayo and was truly a jam.  Decent snow, 2 booters, and lots of hombres throwin' down.  At the end of the day probably 30% of the athletes threw down new tricks that they had never tried including several double flip tricks.  Radness all around.  Congrats to all the athletes, it was a pleasure building a booter for such a solid crew.

Round 3: Crystal Triple Crown

Erick Thompson drops in

The Crystal Mt Triple Crown, the PNW regions largest big mountain board/ski series, wrapped up this past Saturday under sunny skies and spring conditions. A last minute switch from The Silver King to the Elk Chutes, due to spring closures, actually turned out to be a blessing due to significant slough debris in the run-outs of most major venues. Thanks to some very dedicated/supportive parents the debris was stomped out in short order at the Elk Chutes.

thank you parents!

Liam Peifer
Round 3 kicked off with high level skiing delivered early on by a crew of athletes from Whistler setting the bar high with fast, technical skiing.

Each round judges, coaches, and event staff have submitted votes for the "NWF Money Line" which is characterized by best high action, yet fluid and film worthy line of the day. Round 3 nominations went to Nash Grimm, Philip Patterson, Liam Peifer, Corey Nugent, and Austin Stromme. The votes came in with Whistler athlete Liam Piefer taking home the $100 NWF Money Line cash prize.

Leah Blanchard(age 11) and Anna Thompson(age 10) led the girls categories with nice airs, charging hard down the mountain. Anna's brother, Erick Thompson, also took a leap forward in his skiing on Saturday choosing a highly technical line and skiing it quite well. The youngest competitor of the day, Nick Sajer(age 9), skied right through the heart of the venue dropping off rocks and showing that he felt right at home as a 9 year old in double black diamond terrain.

Incorporating style can often be a difficult addition to technical big mountain skiing.  Crystal/NWFreeride team captain Austin Stromme had the most style of the day dropping a huge cork 360 off a cliff for the second time in this series. Upon video review, an additional callout goes to our other Crystal/NWFreeride team captain, Nash Grimm, for incorporating some sick style for a huge air to tree branch, jib tap on the upper section of the venue.  Both Austin and Nash have proven themselves as leaders in their age group, skiing very strong and incorporating freestyle tricks to their freeskiing.  Up and comer Berkeley Patterson also threw a sick 360 off a cliff out of the rock garden but the trickery resulted in a crash.  Keep your eyes on him though as he is turning heads and picking up sponsors for his willingness to push the limits on his skiing.

King of the Hill

Crystal Mountain's King of the Hill went down this past Saturday where men, women, boarders, and skiers fought for the crown on the Silver King in Crystal's South Backcountry. The conditions were quite firm with run-outs full of landmines but still very enjoyable for the boarders and skiers under beautiful sunny skies.

Alex Bachmeier being the lone lady to compete with a score that would have placed her 7th among the men and pioneer status among the women, earned her a Queen of the Hill crown.

Fighting nobly for Kingship status and very deserving of royal praise was Tyler Southworth for winning the Red Bull Extra Credit jam for multiple sick lines on the Sasquatch/AK faces, Mark Erickson for a wicked straight line down "Pinball", Jeremy Martinson for a gnarly direct descent into "Lobotomy", Caleb Cole for a technical line and large air off "L Tree", Rehtt Foster for a creative line skiers left in the double zone, and Austin Peters for his backflip into "Brain Damage".

A trio of boarders challenged for the crown in the progressively mixed skier and boarder competition. Much respect for the soul turns made by the boarding crew!

Placing 4th(and 3rd place stand in) was Lloyd Dahlem for rolling high speed and hitting multiple features in the skier's right chutes. Taking 3rd was Crystal Mt. Ambassador and Warren Miller Entertainment athlete, Tyler Ceccanti, who launched a large backflip out of Lobotomy chute but wasn't quite able to turn back in for additional points on the lower half of the venue.

The top 2 spots on the podium ended up going to Andy DeVore and Josh Wirta, requiring a judges meeting to break a score card tie. Andy and Josh skied the day's most technical lines as well as sent the day's largest airs but Andy was ultimately chosen as King of the Hill for solid execution of the most technical line of the day.

Congrats to all the athletes for a competitive event!

Round 2: Crystal Triple Crown

The Crystal Triple Crown series continued this past week on Northway Bowl. The riders remained focused on the end goal as they competed hard and delivered a solid performance.

The best impression line, known as THE MONEY LINE, voted for by judges, event staff, coaches, etc went to Austin Stromme for a clean run across the heart of the venue closing out with a 360 off Flying Floyd's "diving board".

11-14 girls
1. Oli Moseley
2. Morgan Rood
3. Anna Sajer

11-14 boys
1. Patrick Beighle
2. Berkeley Patterson
3. Cole Herdman

15-18 girls
1. Dani Rowe
2. Nicole Watkins
3. Caroline Lauer

15-18 boys
1. Austin Stromme
2. Philip Patterson
3. Waytte Rood

The final round remains and is planned to be held on the infamous side country, stand alone peak known as The King. We all look forward to watching the last chapter unfold...

As we look forward to Round 3, here is a break down of the scoring:
Triple Crown Standings

*positions descend by 3s
*A tie is broken by the athlete who place higher on the higher point venue. For example, Austin and Philip's tie would be broken by Austin's higher place finish on Northway.
